Super Eagles duo of Alex Iwobi and William Troost-Ekong have also offered their support to the England players – who were racially abuse at the just concluded Euro championship.
England trio of Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were victims of racial abuse after they missed their penalties in the penalty shootout defeat by Italy.
Iwobi, posting on his Instagram story, shared a black-and-white image of the three players, each wearing crowns, as a sign of his support for the trio.
Troost-Ekong, adding his voice to the discussion on racism in football, shared a powerful post from @ukisntinnocent, with a message that reads ‘British when they win. Immigrants when they lose’.
Recall that Iwobi was also a victim of racist abuse in 2019 when he was abused by Bollywood actress Esha Gupta on Whatsapp. Although, Gupta had later apologised to both Iwobi and Arsenal.
Racism remains the most common form of discrimination in football, and it’s no longer news that a number of English Premier League players have been the targets of online racist abuse last season.
Last term, players and clubs in the premier League observed a four-day boycott of social media to protest against online racist abuse and to call on social media companies to do more to police their platforms.
