Chidimma Adetshina, representing Taraba State, has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024.
Her path to the crown has been extraordinary, reflecting the same resilience and poise seen in the Miss Universe South Africa incident, where she faced a controversial disqualification.
Heritage Times HT reports Chidimma Adetshina, the newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, will represent the country on the global stage in Mexico.
Heritage Times HT confirmed her victory in a post on X.
“This crown is not just for beauty; it’s a call for unity,” She stated after she was crowned.
During her time at the Miss South Africa Pageant, South Africans had persistently harassed Adetshina online over her ancestry, and after allegations surfaced that her mother may have committed fraud.
Born in South Africa, Adetshina’s father hails from Nigeria, while her mother is from Mozambique.
As her bullying intensified in past weeks, it reflected broader issues of xenophobia and nationalistic sentiment in the country.
“After much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I,” Adetshina, 23, wrote on Instagram.
Adetshina, a law student, was the subject of vicious, xenophobic attacks on social media since she was announced as a finalist in July, with many — including cabinet ministers — questioning her credentials because of her Nigerian descent.
The beauty queen proved to be a fan favorite throughout the competition after accruing the highest number of votes.
