President Paul Kagame has formally entered his candidacy for Rwanda’s upcoming presidential elections, submitting his papers to the country’s electoral commission.
Having announced his intention for a fourth term last September, Kagame’s bid for reelection comes as no surprise.
With his long-standing tenure, Kagame is widely anticipated to secure victory in the elections, potentially extending his presidency to nearly 30 years.
In the previous presidential election of 2017, Kagame secured an overwhelming victory, garnering close to 99% of the vote.
However, two opposition figures, Bernard Ntaganda and Victoire Ingabire, have been disqualified from contesting in the upcoming election due to prior convictions.
At 66 years old, President Kagame has faced criticism from various rights groups, accusing him of stifling opposition voices.
Nevertheless, Kagame maintains that Rwanda upholds political freedoms.
