Senegal’s Young Teranga Lions on Saturday beat the Scorpions of Gambia 2-0 to emerge the champions of the U20 African Cup of Nations which held in Egypt.
Goals from forward Sulaymane Faye and Midfielder, Mamadou Camara in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, were enough to secure Senegal victory over their arch-rivals.
The West African side qualified to Saturday’s final with a hundred percent record, winning all their matches without conceding a goal.
The Young Teranga Lions, were playing their fourth TotalEnergies U-20 AFCON final, having finished runners-up in 2015, 2017 and 2019.
Malick Daf’s side have followed in the footsteps of the senior Teranga Lions, the ‘Beach Soccer National team’ and the home-based National team in winning continental glory over the last year.
How the Lions roared to triumph
The Senegalese started the game on the front foot and their effort paid off quickly, as Faye netted the opening goal earlier in the game.
The Gambia threatened to level up but the Senegalese proved to be formidable at the back and ensured the end of the first stanza with a 1-0 lead.
The second half resumed, and Gambia, increased the intensity of the game and pegged back the Senegalese but was unable to get the required goal.
Towards the tail end of the game, Camara sealed the game for the Young Terange Lions.
Nigeria had whitewashed Tunisia to claim record bronze medal.
