One of Africa’s representatives at the ongoing FIFA U17 youth World Cup, Senegal, on Saturday beat Argentina 2-1 in their group match.
It was captain Amara Diouf who netted the two goals to ensure that the continental champions produce the upset.
Senegal now face a pivotal Group D clash with Colombia on Monday, while Argentina need to regroup against Canada.
Tough Battle
Diouf opened the scoring in the 6th minute, firing an unstoppable left-footed shot into the bottom corner from the left flank.
Though Argentina dominated possession after falling behind, they however failed to capitalise on several chances to equalise.
The Senegalese team again went ahead in the 38th minute when Diouf struck the second goal he buried at a tight angle.
Again, the South Americans continued pressing in the second half and grabbed a stoppage time lifeline when Agustin Ruberto’s speculative free kick somehow squirmed through goalkeeper Serigne Diouf’s grasp.
However, Senegal held on for a famous victory despite late Argentine pressure.
Diouf Exceptional Display
Diouf was inspirational throughout with his tenacious running and dazzling dribbles.
This result demonstrates Africa’s rising pedigree at youth level after African sides Mali and Morocco won their opening matches at the World Cup on Friday.
