Veteran Al Jazeera Journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh who was killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank while covering an Israeli army raid on the Jenin refugee camp, has become the 12th correspondent of the media outfit killed in the line of duty.
51-year-old Abu Akleh and 11 others have now lost their lives in the line of duty since 1996 when the media outfit was launched till date.
Aljazeera said in a statement that Abu Akleh was “assassinated in cold blood” and called on the international community to hold Israeli authorities accountable.
According to reports, she was killed on Wednesday. She was rushed to a hospital in Jenin in critical condition, where she was declared dead shortly after, at 7:15am (4:15 GMT).
Other Al Jazeera journalists killed in the front lines include: Tariq Ayoub, Rasheed Hamid Wali, Ali Hassan al-jaber, Mohammed al-Massalma, Hussein Abbas, Mohammed al-Qasim.
Mahran al-Deery, Mohamed al-Asfar, Zakariya Ibrahim, Ibrahim all-Over, Mubarak al-Ebadi completes the list.
In honour of the fallen journalists, Al Jazeera established a monument at its headquarters in Doha; a steel tree sculpture with leaves that carry the names of the reporters.
