Sierra Leonean authorities have arrested 14 soldiers, 3 police officers, and 2 civilians on suspicion of plotting to undermine the peace and stability of the country.
The suspects are accused of plotting to undermine the peace and tranquility of the state by using peaceful protests scheduled for this week as a guise to unleash violent attacks against state institutions and peaceful citizens.
Sierra Leone is now under high alert as authorities search for eight more suspects they believe to be tied to the plot, and they have requested Interpol’s help in extraditing any suspects found abroad.
According to the Inspector General William Fayia Sellu, eight of the 14 arrested soldiers held officer positions of lieutenant to major rank, while the six others were non-commissioned officers ranked between private and sergeant.
Former police chief superintendent Mohammed Yaetey Turay was also detained in Liberia in relation to the ongoing investigation, confirmed by Sierra Leone’s information minister, Chernor Bah.
The authorities advise citizens to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and await further updates on the matter.
