President Salva Kiir has directed South Sudan’s political parties to finalize preparations for the nation’s first general elections, set to take place at the end of the transitional period in December 2026.
In a statement broadcast on state media, South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), Kiir called on political groups to formalize their registrations and gear up for the polls.
“Elections are approaching, and that will be the day to cast your votes. We want to see all parties step forward because some have yet to register,” Kiir said.
The upcoming election will mark South Sudan’s first since gaining independence in 2011. However, the process has faced repeated delays due to financial constraints and a lack of preparedness.
Deputy Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Daniel Awet Akot, emphasized the need for national unity to ensure peace and economic progress.
“Let us move forward with one heart and shared purpose,” Akot urged, calling for collective efforts to promote stability and adherence to the rule of law.
Peter Lam Both, SPLM Secretary General, praised President Kiir’s leadership, particularly his efforts to enhance resource allocation and improve service delivery.
“We deeply value your dedication and leadership. Your recent directives to improve resource allocation for service delivery reflect a commitment to uplifting our people,” Both stated.
