War-stricken students from the University of Medical Science and Technology Of Khartoum (UMSR) have arrived in Rwanda to complete their studies on account of the ongoing security concerns in Sudan.
Over 200 students arrived in Kigali early on Wednesday, August 2.
Out of the number, 133 of them are Sudanese, while the rest are from Nigeria, France, Canada, USA, India, Jordan and Ireland.
The students had been stranded and unable to continue studying owing to the current security standoff between government forces and Rapid Security Forces(RSF) in the country.
The development had been confirmed earlier on Tuesday, by the University of Rwanda(UR) Vice Chancellor, Didace Kayihura Muganga.
The students will be enrolled at UR- College of Medicine and Health Science.
The ongoing war in Sudan has led colleges to shut doors, denying students to continue with their regular studies schedule.
Rwanda has designated to receive firstly the final year students, particularly those from general medicine and dentistry and facilitate them in the final studies and practical trainings.
“We agreed to have those who are doing general medicine, especially in their clinical trainings, and part of them into the dentistry department. For those in general medicine, they will be doing clinical rotation while those in dentistry we be doing their clinical trainings,” said the Chancellor.
Rwanda has pledged to extend the help until the instability and crisis will be resolved, and looks at sustainable collaboration with Sudan.
In August 2021, Rwanda also received a group of Afghani girls from the School of Leadership of Afghanistan (SOLA), a single all-girls boarding school in Kabul who were fleeing the country when the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.
