Sudan has expressed strong support for US sanctions against Mohammad Hamdan Daglo, commonly known as Hemedti, the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry accused Hemedti of orchestrating “systematic atrocities” against civilians, urging other nations to adopt similar punitive measures against the RSF, its leaders, and their allies.
The call for global action comes after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared on Tuesday that the RSF and affiliated militias had committed acts of genocide in Sudan.
“We are today sanctioning RSF leader Mohammad Hamdan Daglo Mousa, known as Hemedti, for his role in systematic atrocities committed against the Sudanese people,” Blinken stated.
The sanctions target Hemedti, along with seven companies and one individual linked to the RSF. The aim is to disrupt the financial and operational networks supporting the paramilitary group, which has been accused of widespread violence.
Sudan has been engulfed in deadly conflict since April 2023, as battles between the national army and the RSF have devastated the country. According to estimates from the UN and local authorities, the violence has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and forced more than 14 million people to flee their homes.
The ongoing clashes have sparked international concern, with Sudan’s government pushing for broader global efforts to hold the RSF accountable and address the humanitarian crisis gripping the nation.
