Everton of England forward Alex Iwobi has spoken of his pride at being selected to play for Nigeria but hopes he can play in his preferred position when the Super Eagles lock horns with Benin and Lesotho in a double-header AFCON qualifier later this month.
The 23-year-old, who has remained a regular in the senior national team, having being selected in different positions during competitive fixtures, posted on his Instagram story:
“Always an honour to get a call up to my National Team. Hopefully, I get to play in my preferred position”.
Meanwhile, Iwobi’s versatility is seemingly useful to Ancelotti this season as the Italian has preferred the Nigerian at the wing back position for the Merseyside blue, who have been on a high this term in the league.
While it is not clear whether the message was aimed at his national team boss or his club manager, the former Arsenal man would be looking forward to a successful outing this time with the Eagles when they face the Squirrels of Benin on March 27 and Crocodile of Lesotho on March 30.
Iwobi scored a brace in the Super Eagles 4 – 4 first leg draw against Sierra Leone in November.
Nigeria are to Group L on eight points while Benin sit second on seven points with both teams set for a make or mar clash to determine the group leader.
