The Super Falcons of Nigeria returned to winning ways at the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a 2-0 victory against Botswana in the second round of Group C match on Thursday night.
The nine-time African champions had to get the victory after the opening Group C 2-1 defeat to South Africa on Monday.
Head Coach Randy Waldrum made three changes to the line up against South Africa. He started veterans Francesca Ordega and Ngozi Okobi, while Chiamaka Nnadozie returned as first choice goalkeeper after serving her suspension.
Ifeoma Onumonu opened the scoring with sent a low drive short through a beautiful pass from Halimatu Ayinde in the 21st minute for the Super Falcons who looked more impressive, played with more directness and coordination than they managed against South Africa.
Substitute Christy Ucheibe headed home a well-crafted corner from Toni Payne three minutes (48 mins) into the second half to make it 2-0.
The victory for the nine-time African champions against the Zebras, means they are on course for a record-extending 10th title on back on track heading into the final game against Burundi.
They take Burundi who are already eliminated from the WAFCON following their second defeat. The Swallows lost 3-1 to South Africa who have already advanced to the second round and could finish top of group.
The Super Falcons currently seats in the second position in Group C with three points and a goal advantage above Botswana who are third.
Botswana will face group leaders South Africa in their final group encounter while Nigeria to play a very poor Burundi side.
A win for the Falcons on Sunday July 10 will guarantee them passage to the Quarter-final.
