Switzerland are into the quarterfinals of the European Championship 2024 after a shocking 2-0 defeat of defending champions Italy in the round of 16.
Goals from Freuler and Vargas sealed the win for the Swiss.
It was Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka who dominated in midfield and was the man of the match.
On the other hand, Italy performed woefully while they struggled to win the ball back off their opponents with a lack of any form of creativity and having only one shot on target throughout the match.
Switzerland will now take on the winner of England vs Slovakia match later on.
With the latest performance, the Swiss also ended a run of 11 matches without a win against Italy dating back to 1993.
The defeat to Switzerland means Italy have lost two games in a single edition of the UEFA European Championship for the first time in their history.
Also, the Azzuris have failed to reach the quarter-Final of a UEFA European Championship Finals for the first time since 2004 when they were eliminated at the group stage.
Heritage Times HT reports that this outcome means that each of the last three winners of the UEFA European Championship finals have been eliminated in the round of 16 the following tournament – Spain at Euro 2016, Portugal at Euro 2020 and Italy at Euro 2024.
