The Government of Tanzania has commenced the sixth National Population and Housing Census in the East African country.
As part of efforts geared towards ensuring a seamless census, a national holiday was declared today to allow citizens participate in the enumeration exercise.
President Samia Hassan was among the first to be counted during the exercise which the Government says is vital for national plans.
It is worthwhile to note that former British colony conducts a census every 10 years and the first post-independence in Tanzania kicked off all over the country on August 28, 1967.
In the 2012 census, results indicated there were 43,625,354 million people in Tanzania mainland and 1,303,569 in Tanzania Zanzibar.
UN data estimates Tanzania’s 2020 population to be almost 60 million.
