Queues have formed at polling stations across Tanzania as the Tanzanian sixth multiparty general elections kick off today.
More than 29million people have registered to vote to elect the country’s next president and parliamentary representatives.
There are fifteen presidential candidates including two women.
Tanzania’s President, John Magufuli and his wife Janet have already cast their votes at Chamwana polling station in the capital, Dodoma at 10:00 am local time.
Speaking to newsmen after voting the president said: “I would like to congratulate Tanzanians for seeing this important day, I see the preparations have been good, my wife and I have voted. I insist we continue in peace because there is life beyond the election.”
Meanwhile, reports by BBC indicate that some social media platforms, including Whatsapp and Twitter, have been restricted.

The polling stations are scheduled to close by 16:00 local time (13:00 GMT) while final results are expected to be announced within one week.
It is worthwhile to note that the two major contenders in the election are incumbent president John Magufuli of Chama Cha Mapenduzi (CCM) party while the major challenger is Tundu Lissu of the biggest opposition party Chadema.
