Nigeria, the continent’s most populous nation, is currently topping the medal table at the ongoing African Senior Weightlifting Championship in Mauritius.
After Day One action, Nigerian powerlifters have amassed seven gold, four silver, and one bronze medal.
Athletes Rafiatu Lawal (59kg) and Didih Onome (55kg) led the charge, each claiming three gold medals in their respective weight categories.
Lawal, a 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, was in a class of her own, dominating the 59kg event with confidence and grace.
In addition to their stellar performances, Edidiong Joseph secured one gold and two silver medals in the 73kg category, while Tuesday Emmanuel contributed two silver medals and one bronze to Nigeria’s tally.
Medal prospects Omolola Matthew and Sarah Ovayioza are yet to conclude their categories—Sarah is scheduled to compete on Friday, while Omolola was still in action at the time of reporting.
The African Senior Weightlifting Championship continues until 28 April, with Team Nigeria aiming for more podium finishes and reinforcing its dominance on the continental stage.
