Igad, a regional African organization, announced on Sunday that it intended to send three presidents to Sudan as soon as possible to mediate between the warring opposing armed parties.
In a virtual summit, the group decided to send the leaders of Kenya, South Sudan, and Djibouti to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. Additionally, it demanded that the warring parties in Sudan immediately cease hostilities.
However, it’s unclear when any peace initiative will start while the international airport is closed.
On Monday, fighting between government forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) persisted despite appeals for a cease-fire from the international community.
William Ruto, the President of Kenya, urged the Igad to adopt a tough stance to bring about peace in Khartoum.
A UN jet was severely damaged, and the UN World Food Programme ceased operations due to the deaths of three of its employees.
The battles have claimed close to 100 lives.
