Last night’s two goal hero, Timo Werner has explained Frank Lampard’s decision to replace Jorginho with him for Chelsea’s penalty role.
The Blues were awarded two spot-kicks against Rennes in the Champions League with summer signing Werner putting both past Gomis.
Jorginho is Chelsea’s regular taker though the midfielder handed the ball to his team-mate on this occasion having missed from 12 yards recently.
Werner made the most of it as Chelsea ensured they stayed unbeaten in Europe this season against their ten-man opposition.
And Werner has explained that Lampard wanted him to take penalties, hinting that it helps his own confidence.
The German told BT Sport: “There was no theme this week. Before the game the manager told me if there’s a penalty I should take it today.
“Two today is a little bit crazy. I take it. Good goals for a striker. I hope I can continue to score goals and take penalties.
“When you want to score 20 or more goals you have to take a few penalties in a season.
“It’s a thing which keeps strikers the goals when you get to the high level. I’m happy about that and happy Jorginho is cool with that.
“I think it’s another point that speaks for our team. We have no selfish players. We all want to go in the same direction.”
Lampard admitted it was a tough decision to take Jorginho off penalties but the former Napoli man took the call well.
He said, “It was not an easy decision because Jorginho has been pretty faultless. He had missed two recently and Timo came in and scored.
“I had a word with Jorghino and his answer was perfect, he said he didn’t mind who came in to take them he just wanted to score. Timo came in and scored so I am happy.”
The Blues sit top of group E with seven points from three matches trailed but Sevilla with five goals difference.
