Team Nigeria has finally reached the Tokyo Olympics podium, after Blessing Oborodudu won her semi-final bout against Mongolia’s Battsetseg Soronzonbold in the women’s 68kg wrestling competition.
Oborodudu will either pick up the gold medal or silver which means Team Nigeria has finally secured the first medal at the ongoing quadrennial event.
However, more medals could get into the kitty, with the likes of Adekuoroye Odunayo, Ese Brume, Grace Nwokocha and others expected to increase the tally for Team Nigeria
Oborodudu overcame Soronzonbold 7-2 to land a first ever medal for Nigeria in wrestling at the Olympics.
Soronzonbold won bronze at the 2012 London Olympics and two gold medals at the 2010 and 2015 World Championships.
The Nigerian had beaten Azerbaijani Elis Manolova & Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan to advance to her first Olympic semi-finals.
Oborodudu will square off against 28-year-old Tamyra Mensah from USA on Tuesday.
Mensah, who won bronze and gold at the World Championships in 2018 and 2019 respectively, beat Ukraine’s Alla Cherkasova 10-4 in the other semi-final.
