The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched investigation after it was plunged into another corruption crisis.
In it, CAF Secretary-General, Veron Omba-Mosengo, was alleged to be involved in corruption, following a report that indicted earlier this week.
The probe move was confirmed by CAF via a press statement sent to Heritage Times HT on Friday.
Part of the statement reads, “The Confederation Africaine de Football (“CAF”) has requested its Audit and Governance Committee to investigate allegations of breach of its internal Governance and Auditing Regulations within the CAF Secretariat.
“The Audit and Governance Committee will appoint one of the most respected international Law Firms or an internationally respected Audit and Professional Services firm, to investigate the alleged breach of CAF’s internal Audit and Governance Regulations and thereafter submit a Report to the CAF Executive Committee (”EXCO”).”
Commenting, President of CAF Dr Patrice Motsepe said: “There is zero tolerance in CAF for corruption or breaching CAF’s internal governance, audit and transparency regulations or for violating CAF and FIFA Statutes and Regulations. We have committed CAF to adhering to global governance, audit, transparency and ethics best practices and established in 2021, an Internal Governance and Compliance Department in CAF.
“This Internal Governance and Compliance Department brought the alleged breach of CAF’s internal Audit and Governance Regulations to our attention. The current culture in CAF of implementing and adhering to global governance, audit, transparency and ethics best practices has resulted in CAF being respected by its sponsors, partners, African Governments and other African and international stakeholders.
“We are committed and determined to retain this hard-earned respect. The CAF EXCO will discuss the Report and recommendations of the Audit and Governance Committee and appropriate action will immediately be taken if improper conduct or behaviour is identified by the Audit and Governance Committee.”
The CAF Audit and Governance Committee consists of the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the CAF Governance Committee (Justice Petrus Damaseb and Mr Happi Dieudoné respectively) and the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the CAF Audit and Compliance Committee (Mr Mohammed Zaazi and Mr Mouhamed Nour-Dine Assindoh respectively). Justice Petrus Damaseb is the Chair of the CAF Audit and Governance Committee.
