U.S. President Donald Trump has extended an open invitation to South African white farmers and their families who are facing persecution in their home country.
Trump also promised them a swift path to U.S. citizenship as they flee the growing uncertainty in South Africa due to controversial land expropriation laws.
“Any farmer (with family!) from South Africa, seeking to flee that country for reasons of safety, will be invited into the United States of America with a rapid pathway to citizenship. This process will begin immediately!” Trump declared in a post on Truth Social on Friday.
The remarks come after the recent passage of South Africa’s new land expropriation bill, signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
While the South African government maintains that the law is meant to redistribute land for public use, critics, including Trump, argue that it unfairly targets white farmers, leading to land confiscations and widespread fears of escalating persecution.
Trump has been vocal in condemning the bill, stating, “South Africa is being terrible, plus, for a long time, farmers in the country. They are confiscating their land and farms, and much worse than that. A bad place to be right now, and we are stopping all federal funding.”
The U.S. leader also announced the suspension of all foreign aid to South Africa in response to the law.
