Tunisia’s Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi has said he is ready to resign amid political crisis in the nation.
“If my resignation is a solution, I will not hesitate to announce it,” Ghannouchi told a local daily.
Recall, Tunisia has been in the grip of a deep political crisis since President Kais Saied ousted the Government, suspended Parliament, and assumed Executive authority on July 25.
Tunisia is viewed as the only country that succeeded in carrying out a democratic transition after the popular Arab Spring uprisings in 2011.
While Saied insists that his “exceptional measures” are meant to “save” the country, critics accuse him of orchestrating a coup.
“We are faced with two options; either to have the president retract his decisions or the crisis will continue,” Ghannouchi said.
“The proposed solution to resolve the crisis is to have the president abide by the constitution and its mechanisms,” he added.
