The final date for removing free verification for Twitter accounts has been announced by Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter.
In a tweet on Tuesday from his verified Twitter account, @Elonmusk, Musk disclosed that the final date for removing legacy blue checks is April 20, 2023.
Verified Twitter users did not have to pay to get verified or pay for a monthly subscription to renew their verifications before Musk became the CEO.
Twitter had earlier announced in March that it would begin removing all legacy blue checks from April 1, 2023.
“On April 1st, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks. To keep your blue checkmark on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue,” the company said in a tweet.
Musk has already removed the verification badge of the New York Times, a daily newspaper based in New York City, United States of America.
The newspaper, which had a worldwide readership of 740,000 paid print subscribers and 8.6 million paid digital subscribers in 2022, said it would not subscribe to Twitter Blue unless it was needed for reporting purposes.
