Twitter CEO Elon Musk has announced that the microblogging site will delete 1.5 billion inactive accounts.
“Twitter will soon start freeing the namespace of 1.5 billion accounts. These are obvious account deletions with no tweets & no log-in for years,” he tweeted on Friday.
According to him, this will help to free the space being occupied by those accounts on Twitter.
Musk said most of the accounts may have been deleted by the owners, as there have been no tweets or login activities on them for years.
Reacting to Elon Musk’s announcement of plans to delete dormant accounts, some Twitter users commended the move, saying that it will now free some names that can be used to register new accounts.
Others, however, queried the billionaire saying he has yet to fulfil his promise of restoring suspended accounts before thinking of deleting inactive accounts.
In another tweet, Musk said in a few weeks, tweets will show view count just like videos do.
“Twitter is much more alive than people think,” he said.
He added that “Twitter is working on a software update that will show your true account status, so you know clearly if you’ve been shadowbanned, the reason why and how to appeal.”
Since Musk has taken up ownership of Twitter, he has been trying to escalate free speech.
He said that “hate speech impressions” are actually down by a third since he bought the company.
