A mysterious illness, locally known as “Dinga Dinga”, is rapidly spreading across Uganda’s Bundibugyo district, leaving health experts perplexed.
Over 300 cases have been reported, with patients experiencing severe body shaking, fever, and difficulty walking. The disease appears to disproportionately affect women and girls, though no fatalities have been recorded.
Dr Kiyita Christopher, the district health officer, stated that patients are responding well to antibiotic treatments and generally recover within a week. He urged residents to seek medical care at health facilities and avoid herbal remedies.
“There is no scientific evidence that herbal medicine can treat this disease. We are using specific treatments, and most patients recover quickly,” Dr Christopher noted.
Health officials are actively investigating the cause of the illness and working to contain its spread. Despite the unknown origins, Dr Christopher reassured the public that current treatments are proving effective.
