Daughter of Republican former US President George W. Bush has shunned her father’s party, endorsing Democrat Kamala Harris in the race for the White House.
Barbara Bush, 42, spent part of the weekend campaigning for the Vice President Haris in Pennsylvania, considered one of the most crucial swing states that will decide the next month election between Harris and the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.
“It was inspiring to join friends and meet voters with the Harris-Walz campaign in Pennsylvania this weekend,” People Magazine quoted her as saying.
“I’m hopeful they’ll move our country forward and protect women’s rights,” she stated.
The former US leader’s daughter has been described as an independent, but her family is of Republican fold.
Her late grandfather George H.W. Bush also served as President.
An influential group of prominent Republicans who disagree with Trump on issues of abortion, migration and democracy, has also endorsed Harris in the race to White House.
Her father George W. Bush has so far refused to endorse a candidate in the election and has refused to comment on critical issues since he left office.
Barbara Bush has been outspoken on her abortion views and backing right of citizens to have planned parenthood.
Former President Trump on the other hand has claimed that his choice of Supreme Court justices paved the way for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and the end of federal protections for abortion access.
Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States generally protected a right to have an abortion.
Since that 2022 court ruling that voided it, at least 20 US states have brought in full or partial restrictions, making abortion one of the key issues in this election.
