The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) surely showed why they are one of the leading lights in women global football on Saturday evening (Nigerian time) with a 4-0 thrashing of former African Champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria in a friendly match.
The game also served as a prelude to 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
During the encounter, Sophia Smith opened the scoring in the 14th minute for the World champions before Lindsay Horan made it 2-0 in the 25th minute after Christy Uchebe forced a save from the US goalkeeper.
Smith completed her brace in the 45th minute and ended the half 3-0 in favour of the host.
Alex Morgan then made it 4-0 in the 54th minute via spot kick and despite mounting an appreciable improvement thereafter, the Falcons were subdued by the more experienced Americans.
The match which was played at the Kansas City Stadium was a disappointing result for the Nigerian ladies.
But it was an exciting experience and exposure for the young and ambitious group of talents who had Nigeria’s U-20 Falconets players incorporated into the team.
The match was one of two friendly matches lined up with the Americans.
It is the first time the team regrouped after their 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) unimpressive showing in Morocco two months ago.
The second leg will be played on September 6 in Washington DC.
