Kamaru Usman retained his welterweight title with an impressive second round knock out win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261 on Saturday night.
It was the fighters’ second meeting in less than a year and Usman doubled his victory inside seven minutes, and proceeded to dropping multiple punches at his opponent before referee Herb Dean stepped in.
Asked if those last couple of “extra shots” felt good to him, Usman told a reporter at the UFC 261 post-fight press conference that they were “super necessary.”
While Masvidal admitted suffering a knockout in the hands of Kamaru Usman in front of his family and friends really hurts.
He said: ”First time [I’ve been knocked out] in my career and it’s front of my people, my family and my friends so it hurts.
“I’ve never been knocked out in 54 fights. Usman showed me something I didn’t see in the first fight. I didn’t see his power.
“I thought we were going to wrestle more, I was ready to wrestle for 25 minutes. All the props in the world to him, he caught me by surprise and he has my number. There’s nothing I can say but he won fair and square.”
The high points of the event was when Usman paid tribute to his father, Muhammed Usman, who has been in jail since 2010, as he watched his son’s fight live.
Muhammed was arrested in 2009 on the charge of multiple false claims submitted by his ambulance company. 11 months after his arrest, in May 2010.
He was convicted of 14 federal charges and sentenced to 180-month prison time and restitution of $1.3 million.
Muhammed was released in February, 2020, from a Texas prison, where he served 10 of the 15 years he was sentenced to.
