The Ukrainian national team have requested that their World Cup qualifying playoff againat Scotland be pushed back.
The play-off semi-final was due to be played at Hampden Park on March 24, with the winner going on to face Austria or Wales in Cardiff for a place in this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
But now Ukraine have asked both international tournament bodies to postpone the fixture, owing to the ongoing invasion of the country by the Russian military.
“Football is inconsequential in the middle of a conflict,” a statement said after the request was made to FIFA.
This could pose a daunting task for FIFA, given that the World Cup group stage draw is scheduled for April 1, ahead of the tournament starting on November 21.
Meanwhile, June 14 would be the latest date possible for qualification for Qatar 2022, as the 32 teams usually have to attend FIFA workshops and these take place 100 days before the start of the World Cup.
