The White House reacted with a strong reprimand after Donald Trump, the former president, recommended on Saturday that the Constitution be suspended as part of his ongoing campaign to cast doubt on the outcome of the 2020 election.
White House spokesman Andrew Bates called the Constitution a “sacrosanct document” and said attacking it and everything it stands for is “anathema to the essence of our nation” and should be universally condemned.
He continued, “You cannot only love America when you win.”
Trump’s post on the Truth Social platform repeated the illogical accusations he has made about the election being rigged since 2020. But he went a step farther and advocated for the nation to renounce one of its fundamental articles.
Trump stated in his letter that “a Massive Fraud of this kind and size allows for the termination of all laws, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”
The statement was published a day after Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, threatened to reveal how the social media platform has suppressed “free speech” in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election. However, his “Twitter Files” did not demonstrate that the tech giant bowed to Democratic demands.
“UNPRECEDENTED FRAUD REQUIRES UNPRECEDENTED CURE!” On Saturday afternoon, Trump followed up with another post on Truth Social.
His remarks were denounced on Saturday by the Democratic National Committee and a number of other politicians.
Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) declared in a tweet that “Trump’s comments and deeds are unacceptable, they incite hatred and political violence, and they are deadly.”
Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) tweeted, “Trump just called for the suspension of the Constitution and it is the ultimate straw for zero republicans, especially the ones who call themselves ‘constitutional conservatives’.”
