England Women came out on top in a tension-soaked 120 minutes of action with Germany Women to be crowned continental champions for the very first time in the Women’s Euro 2022 final on Sunday.
The Three Lionesses at the 87,000-strong Wembley Stadium, in a dramatic fashion edged old rivals and eight-time champions Germany 2-1.
Substitute Chloe Kelly poked home a loose ball from a corner to send the record crowd of 87,192 into a frenzy with ten minutes of extra time remaining.
She waited for confirmation of the goal before taking off her shirt and waving it around her head, while being lifted by her team-mates in a moment of pure elation.
Ella Toone had earlier come off the bench to score the opener in normal time before Germany’s Lina Magull set up a nervous ending when she equalised in the 79th minute.
The first half of the extra time also ended 1-1 but the hero of the night and Man City forward,Kelly made the difference for England as she scored probably the most important English goal in more than half a century.
A record attendance of 87,192 fans were at Wembley to watch England take on their age-long rivals Germany.
The trophy is England’s first on home soil in 56 years as they’ve not won any national tournament since the 1966 men’s World Cup.
The senior men national team had come close to clinching their first major title but saw that hope crushed in a penalty shootout loss to Italy in Euro 2020.
