The World Food Programme (WFP) has been awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts in combating hunger and improving conditions for peace in conflict-prone areas.
The UN programme which provided food to 100 million people last year, praised its staff after taking the honour which is the 101st Nobel Peace Prize to be handed out.
Announcing the WFP’s award at the Nobel Institute in Oslo on Friday, the chairperson of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen said the committee preferred the WFP for the award because it wanted to raise awareness about “the millions of people who suffer from or face the threat of hunger.”
The award, according to her, is also a call to the international community to fund the agency adequately and to ensure people are not starving.
