Nigeria’s Former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says 79 countries have backed her candidacy for WTO Job.
Ngozi has also disclosed that she has the full support of 55-man African Union (AU) over her only opponent, Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea.
The former managing director of World Bank who disclosed theses during a virtual press conference on Friday said she is “optimistic” about amassing support from Latin America, adding that she felt she had gotten “very good traction and good support” in Asia so far.
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) is due to announce its preference “soon”.
“I feel the wind behind my back.
“I feel quite confident that across the regions, we will be able to attract support,” Okonjo-Iweala added.
It is worthwhile to note that the WTO is set to be led by a woman for the first time in the organization’s history.
Whoever emerges as Director-general between the duo will replace Roberto Azevedo, who stepped down as D.G. in August, a year ahead of schedule.
