The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared free train rides for citizens from December 24 to January 4, 2022.
Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja.
”The decision which was made in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation is to ease movement of citizens during the yuletide. This is to help ease the cost of transportation and enable citizens to move easily enjoy the festive period,” Mr Okhiria explained.
He stated further that passengers “are, however, advised to ensure they obtain their tickets from appropriate quarters at no cost” to enjoy the free train rides.
“All passengers are also enjoined to observe and obey COVID-19 rules by wearing of face mask, washing and sanitising of hands,” Mr Okhiria added.
The NRC boss also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to ensure the safety of passengers and trains during the period.
Earlier, the NRC increased the number of daily travels on Lagos-Ibadan train service.
The corporation said the trains will start operating from 8 am on December 20, 2021, to 4 pm on January 9, 2022.
