Authorities in Livingstone have detained a couple for allegedly attempting to smuggle three Zimbabwean children, aged between four and twelve, into Zambia.
The suspects, identified as Humphrey Likando (62) and Maggie Phiri (51) of Dambwa Central, were apprehended at the Victoria Falls Border Control during their smuggling attempt.
According to Immigration Department Public Relations Officer Namatu Nshiinka, immigration officers intercepted a taxi driven by James Simaundu, who was transporting the children across the border. Upon questioning, Simaundu failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the children’s identities or origins, prompting authorities to detain him for further investigation.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that Likando and Phiri had hired Simaundu to transport the children from Zimbabwe into Zambia. The purpose of the smuggling attempt remains unclear, and authorities have yet to determine whether it was linked to child trafficking or other illegal activities.
The Immigration Department has reiterated its commitment to curbing human smuggling and trafficking, urging the public to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the children’s welfare and whether they have any family ties in Zambia.
Authorities have assured the public that appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved in the case, emphasising Zambia’s zero-tolerance policy on child smuggling and human trafficking.
