AC Milan Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic may call it time on his professional career after he underwent a knee surgery that could keep him out for up to eight months.
Ibrahimović missed large portions of Milan’s title-winning campaign with injury. The 40-year-old Swede made 23 appearances in Serie A, although most of them were off the bench.
The 40-year-old’s current deal at Milan expires this summer and he is not expected to be fit until midway through the 2022-23 campaign.
Milan in a statement on their official website read: “AC Milan announces that Zlatan Ibrahimovic underwent an operation on his left knee carried out by Dr Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, with the club’s medical director Stefano Mazzoni in attendance, at the Hospital Jean Mermoz in Lyon.
“The arthroscopy had been planned for a while to definitively resolve the joint’s instability through the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, with lateral reinforcement and meniscus reparation.
“The operation was a complete success and the prognosis is estimated between seven and eight months.”
Ibrahimovic’s return at the start of 2020 signaled a huge turnaround for Milan that saw the Rossoneri finish second last season and end their 11-year wait for the league title this season.
The former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Manchester United striker scored eight goals for AC Milan in the just concluded league campaign.
